Ingersoll Road / McLaren.Excell
A distinctive extension to a Victorian terraced house in Shepherd’s Bush. The architects used a restrained palette of exposed concrete, grey elm and corten steel to create a contemporary family space, with generous natural light and carefully considered connections to the garden.
I kept the photography simple, working with a medium format digital camera and rodenstock lenses. The materials, natural light and the way the family occupied the space were the main interests for me. I particularly enjoyed photographing the family, allowing the children to carry on playing while I worked.
One of my favourite images is of the young girl with red hair sitting against the concrete wall. Her hair picks up the warm rust tones of the corten steel outside, an unexpected connection between the architecture and the people living in it.
The resulting photographs are a mixture of architectural views, quieter details and informal moments of family life, showing not just the design but how the house was being used.
