Dance Photography

I photograph contemporary dance with an emphasis on light, timing and form — freezing movement at its most expressive moment. Working primarily in London studios, I collaborate with dance companies and individual performers to create images that feel dynamic, precise and atmospheric.

If you are planning a campaign, rehearsal shoot or portfolio session, do get in touch — I am always interested in new collaborations.

Origins and Studio Practice

I am a London-based dance photographer, working primarily in professional studios across the city and occasionally in Cambridge, where I also run workshops at Storey’s Field Community Centre.

My introduction to dance photography came in 2014 while photographing Rambert’s new headquarters for Allies & Morrison. During that commission I met artistic director Mark Baldwin, rehearsal director Angela Towler and the dancers themselves. What began as an architectural assignment quickly evolved into an exploration of movement.

With carefully positioned lighting and high-speed flash, I started experimenting with freezing motion at its most expressive moment — discovering a new dimension within my practice.

Light, Precision, Form & Movement

My background in architecture strongly influences the way I photograph dancers.

Early experiments combined architectural space with movement, often working at a distance with large format systems. Over time my approach has become more intimate — working closer to the body while maintaining compositional precision.

Today I use medium format systems with high flash synchronisation to freeze motion with clarity and sculptural definition. Lighting remains central to my process: shaping the body, emphasising line, tension and form, and creating a sense of depth within the studio environment.

There is a natural overlap between my architectural work and dance photography — both require an understanding of structure, movement, proportion and the relationship between light and space.

Collaboration & Creative Growth

Alongside commissioned work, I regularly initiate collaborative studio sessions to continue exploring movement and light. I work in studios with infinity coves or distinctive interiors, always seeking new ways to refine the relationship between dancer and space.

I have collaborated with artists at pivotal moments in their careers — including Mthuthuzeli November when he first arrived in the UK. It has been rewarding to see many collaborators go on to receive international recognition.

I photograph rehearsals, campaigns and tour promotion for dance companies, and I also produce limited edition fine art prints from selected projects.

If you are a dancer or company interested in creating new work together, I would be delighted to hear from you.
